Champions League Format for 1999-2000

---------------------------------------------------

The format is a slight variant of that originally announced by UEFA on December 11 '98. The changes from the original were caused by 2 factors:

  1. Defending champions, Manchester United already qualified as English Champions. This resulted, among other things, in Rosenborg, champions of Norway (Country 10), automatically gaining places in the Champions League Phase. It should be pointed out that the same would have happened had Bayern won the Cup in 1999 as they too won their domestic title.
  2. Clubs from Bosnia-Herzegovina were not admitted to this years's competitions due to cancellation of the country's qualifying tournament.

The country numbers in the table refer to countries' positions in June 1998 in the UEFA Country Co-efficient Table, a table of the 5-year indicators of every national association's clubs' performances in European competitions. This table determines the number of clubs from each country to take part in the Champions League and UEFA Cup in 1999-2000. A different table, the UEFA Club Co-efficient Table, is used for the purposes of seeding (and consequently the draw) within the competitions themselves.
